M and I

This is an series I shot several years ago with M, a lover who is herself an artist as well. My goal was to make a personal memento of a passionate romance, with no intention of ever sharing it beyond a few close friends who understand what I’m reaching at with my work (to be honest, even I don’t always know what I’m going for, but that’s another blog post). The friends I have shared it with have been incredibly supportive, and M herself encouraged me to share it publicly as well.

I have been very hesitant to share this work since it is so deeply personal and private. By nature, I am usually cautious and reserved, concerned about what others might think, worried about my reputation as an artist. Almost a year after promising another close friend that I would post this, I’m finally ready to share it.

I am posting this work publicly in the hope that perhaps it will do a little bit to reduce the stigma associated with embracing one’s sexual side, and to encourage others to step out of their boundaries and experiment (and maybe even make some art as well).

The lighting is a simple ceiling light, the camera is resting on a tripod set at eye level, its lens manually focused, and its shutter controlled by a release cable held in my hand. What these photos may lack in composition variety, perhaps they will make up in other ways.

If you feel inspired by this work, or would like to talk about art, I’d love to hear from you. Shoot me a message here.
